Notes

Edition of 693. Signed by Hirst with a printed number on a label to the verso. Inazō Nitobe defines Honour as having a 'vivid consciousness of personal dignity and worth'. At times in which Honour threatened to reach 'morbid excess' it would be counterbalanced by preaching of magnanimity and patience. Nitobe records that Honour was the highest prize of earthly existence and that fame, not wealth or knowledge, stood as the goal of youths.
