A Prospect of Westminster.....
La Ville de Westmunster.London : 1724 Stock Code: 134286
NotesThis fine Map is from 'Nouveau Théâtre de la Grande Bretagne', the five-volume set celebrated for its survey of the country house during the Augustinian age as captured in the superb series of plates engraved by the Dutch draughtsmen; Johannes Kip and Leonard Knyff. The work is considered to be one of the most important topographic works of the eighteenth century. A number of other premier engravers contributed to produce some outstanding plates that show the royal palaces, naval towns, cathedrals and large panoramic views of London, Westminster and Cambridge. Published by Joseph Smith. This map stretches from Peterborough House (fig. A) and The Hors Fary to St. Clement Danes (fig.a). Buckingham House is central with the long rows of trees in St. James's Park receding towards the house.
Copper engraving on two conjoined sheets. Uncoloured. Size: 49 x 113.5 mm. Presented in a handmade frame with conservation mount.
Very good condition. Slight toning. Archivally backed with Japon tissue.
